back firing MGBGT through the carburetters
MGB GT 1978..Just put on new leads, dist. cap, coil and am fairly sure I got the leads back in the right order on the dist. cap. It goes, it starts but it is making
a hell of a noise by exploding fuel through the carbs and then via the
exhaust pipe.
I know you will say timing. I have now spent a lot of time changing the leads around re-timing it from tdc on the crank pulley etc. It has just passed its MoT. I want to use the car but the dear old ladies of Largs are suffering from cardiac arrest every time I go there...help.
If nothing else please recommend a decent garage who like MG's nearby.
Thanks!!

Re backfiring
Sounds as if the leads are mixed. Should be in the order of 1,3,4,2 with 1 nearest the radiator. On my distributor, 1 is in the 4 o'clock position. Static timing should be 5 degrees BTDC and 10 to14 degrees at 1000rpm with the vacuum pipe disconnected. Did you remove the whole distributor? If so, the timing may be 180 degrees out and No.1 cylinder will be nearest the bulkhead.

Re backfiring
I forgot to add that "Parkhouse Garage", Parkhouse Road Ardrossan are MGB friendly and nearer than Motherwell!

Backfiring through the carbs.
Thanks to all who replied to me.
It seems such a simple thing but it will have to be Parkhouse
Garage!!. I will go and see them first.
I have exhausted all the most likely things I can think of and
I have tried the timing as well... as you suggest...no luck!!
Cheers,
Duncan

Let us know the outcome, shame though I thought Largs could do with a bit of a wake up!
